Saxnet intros Meshnode III mesh networking router

Lookin’ for a WLAN router with a 500MHz AMD processor within? If you’re frantically waving your hand in a futile attempt to say yes, Saxnet’s got your goods. The German firm’s Meshnode III is a well-spec’d mesh networking router that features a “full x86-based system” within, four OSI Layer 2-compatible radio modules and “an integrated heating and cooling system” to boot. Additionally, this thing packs 256MB of RAM (expandable to 1GB), a pair of 512MB CF cards (expandable to 16GB each), 802.11a/b/g support, twin USB 2.0 ports, a rugged, water-resistant enclosure and Debian GNU / Linux runnin’ the show. As you may expect, such a loaded device comes with a fairly stiff pricetag, but at least you’ve got a few months to save up the $1,150 it’ll take to snap one up when it lands in January.

Diversion Tactics: Distractingly Buxom Halle Berry Talks About Her Movie And The Wildfires, We Think

Halle Berry’s publicist deserves a nice raise; knowing that erasing the public’s already fading memory of JewishCousinNoseGate would take nothing more than a plunging neckline and an eager gallery of photographers, he gave the front of her dress a final, downward tug and pushed her in front of the cameras at the London Film Festival, confident that by the end of her interview, the only thing anyone would be thinking about are the exciting ways that motherhood has changed her.

Intel fires up Penryn production at new Arizona facility

We don’t proclaim to be experts in chip making or anything, but it seems like everything at Intel’s new Fab 32 production facility in Chandler, Arizona better function mighty smoothly in order to meet that November 12th street date the firm is still holding to. Yep, today marks the day that Intel starts production on its highly-anticipated Penryn at a $3 billion factory, which is being hailed as the company’s “first plant dedicated to churning out 45-nanometer microprocessors.” ‘Course, Intel’s only got six days left if it plans on being the first company to crank out the goods before ole Panasonic steals the thunder, and you can bet we’ll be waiting in tense anticipation.

[Variety]

Another Halloween, Another ‘Saw’ Sequel, Another Big Pile Of Money For Lions Gate [Monday Morning Box Office]

sawIV.jpgEase your disappointment from walking into a Halloween party this weekend to discover that no fewer than five other people had been stricken by the same “California wildfire” brainstorm that led you to char your favorite souvenir Malibu t-shirt by reviewing the weekend’s box office numbers:

1. Saw IV - $32.11 million
For a third consecutive Halloween weekend, Lions Gate’s strategy of supplying teenage ticket-buyers with a fresh installment of the Saw franchise at the precise moment when their hunger to be delivered an unimaginative, gore-drenched horror sequel is at its natural peak has paid off, bringing the studio yet another easy, late-October box office win.

While LG’s inevitable success with this fourth chapter already has them promising that Saw V will hit theaters a year from now, we fear they’re thinking way too small. They should be testing their devoted audience’s seemingly insatiable appetite for their product by announcing that they’ll simultaneously release three new sequels next Halloween, unveiling an early mock-up of the one-sheet depicting villain Jigsaw trying to force-feed a trio of his blood-splattered, edged torture implements into the gaping maw of a victim chained to a theater seat.

2. Dan in Real Life - $12.081 million
Not even Hollywood’s Second Most Likable Star (first place, of course, belongs to disarmingly cherubic killer spy Matt Damon) stood a chance against Saw, although Disney did do decent business giving parents a place to kill a couple of hours while their kids were busy being further desensitized to graphic violence on the other side of the multiplex.

3. 30 Days of Night - $6.7 million
Credit Sony for being smart enough to get their vampire movie into theaters a week before Lions Gate’s buzzsaw tore through theaters, allowing Josh Hartnett his fleeting moment at the top of the box office.

4. The Game Plan - $6.257 million

5. Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? - $5.74 million
After seeing the ads for Will Smith’s I Am Legend that seemed to appear during every commercial break this weekend, the management team for Hollywood’s stealth superstar is actively developing Tyler Perry’s Why Am I The Last Man on Earth?, a lighthearted, family-friendly look at how humanity’s sole survivor comes to grips with discovering that his millions of his once incredibly loyal, church-going fans have been turned into homicidal zombies by a mysterious virus.

Wireless picturephone prototypes headed to history museum

Filed under:

History buffs and cellphone aficionados, take note: a couple of wireless picturephone prototypes (circa 1993) have recently been acquired by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and should soon be available for all to gawk at. Reportedly, the institution joined with Daniel A. Henderson to get ahold of the two devices and related documentation, which were built to take advantage of a picture / video receiving technology known as Intellect. Notably, this ain’t Mr. Henderson’s first time donating wares with varying levels of historical significance, as he’s also responsible for the Casio Z7000 and Atari Portfolio that are on display. Interested in checkin’ the duo out for yourself? Go on and circle summer 2008 on your calender.

Babel TV set-top-box weds Freeview, PVR, and internet

We’ve never been much for using one’s television as their primary web surfing display — after all, how do you expect to get any work done with last week’s episode of The Office drawing your attention away from that oh-so-critical PowerPoint — but for those who’d enjoy access every now and then without having to attach a dedicated computer, Babel TV could be just the thing. Available solely in the UK, this multifaceted set-top-box enables users to tune into and record Freeview broadcasts, stream video clips / programming from the web and even make VoIP calls. Furthermore, the box is “managed remotely by Babel TV’s technical team,” and copies of all your files can be automatically stored at a secure location (for a price, we presume). Reportedly, the unit should be available early next month for £295 ($602), and yes, that does include a wireless keyboard and pointer to keep you firmly planted on the sofa.
